It has taken years and millions of tax dollars to develop, so I hope you will not be disappointed.

It’s late and I have exactly 100 miles in the dark to write this. I am headed Westward on Arizona Highway 60, one of the most treacherous stretches of road in the land; scary hairpin turns and bottomless canyons, smashed, exploded fragments of autos from all eras littering the cliff sides round nearly every corner. It’s like a James Bond movie, which is funny, because so is my life, observe...

I was born on an Air Force base in Virginia to some teenage children. After a short classified assignment for the president, my family returned home to Washington State. From about age four to age fifteen, I was raised by dogs and cats. I occasionally intersected with my parents by accident. “Oh it’s you?! I have to make you a lunch, don’t I?” As I grew into a young adult I was very confused and lacked direction. My parents very much wanted me to become a crack-whore, but I gravely disappointed them by graduating from college. Though they did not notice until years after the event, they still take my failings personally.

And now, here I am, humbled before you dear readers, begging your attention from such things as reality television and Wendy’s bacon cheeseburgers so that you might notice my rock band. Yes, my rock band. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that I, Neko Case, could be part of something so grand. I have become equal parts truck driver, gladiator, and mule. It has been no bed of roses, and clean gas station toilets are few and far between, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. And in America no less! It just goes to show that if you keep plowing away, extraordinary things can happen. Why just today in this beautiful part of the country I’ve seen two wolves, an elk, four javelinas, a fox, a coyote, and a great horned owl. Wow! Wealth indeed! By far the wildest thing I’ve seen today however was a KFC day-manager named “Shelly” wearing a floor length leather trench coat sporting a very serious tattoo of a vampire bite/neck puncture wound. She had her KFC baseball cap on too. I wonder what kind of fantasy mate Shelly is trying to attract? To me, the tattoo says “I’m lookin’ to date make-believe Draculas.” That’s the kind of pioneering spirit I’m talking about. Just out there waving in the wind. Rock is my make-believe Dracula. I just don’t have a tattoo of it on my neck, I have a website.

In October 2010, T Bone Burnett organized a wonderful group of musicians, dubbed The Speaking Clock Revue, and joined with Participant Media for concerts benefiting arts education. The Speaking Clock Revue featured a house band made up of musicians from many T Bone-produced recordings, and led by music director and guitarist Marc Ribot. The resulting album contains 11 previously unreleased performances by Elton John and Leon Russell, Elvis Costello, John Mellencamp, Gregg Allman, Ralph Stanley, Jeff Bridges, Neko Case, Yim Yames, Punch Brothers, Karen Elson, and The Secret Sisters.

T Bone was inspired to do the fundraising concerts after attending an early screening of Participant's documentary Waiting for Superman, from Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, It Might Get Loud), which focused on the troubled state of public education in the U.S., following a handful of promising students through a U.S. public school system and offering creative new approaches to education reform. Proceeds from the sale of the album benefit arts and music education in public schools.

About the Mercury Cougar
Introduced in 1967 and named that year's Motortrend Car of the Year, this burgundy Mercury Cougar came standard with a hardtop 289 V8 and serious muscle. It's got an automatic transmission, 3-speed “Merc-o-matic,” red interior with aqua space lights, wood steering wheel, hideaway headlights, sequential tail lights, and a fully wired car stereo. Only sold in two-door. Neko named this car “Angie Dickinson.” It’s only had two owners and has its original paint. There is enough room in the back of the car to move a small apartment, house your lending library, or to fit your band’s gear (or your kid’s band’s gear!). The beloved photo of Neko standing on the Cougar on the Middle Cyclone album cover has been nominated for the 2009 “Best Recording Package” Grammy.

About 826 National:
826 National is a family of eight nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping students, ages 6-18, with expository and creative writing. Our mission is based on the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
Each chapter offers after-school tutoring, field trips, workshops, and in-schools programs — all free of charge — for children, classes, and schools with particular interests or particular needs. 826 is especially committed to supporting teachers, offering services and resources for English language learners, and publishing student work. All locations offer unique retail experiences as well.

About Neko Case:
Neko Case’s latest release Middle Cyclone debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and has sold over 200,000 albums worldwide. The album was nominated for two Grammy awards: “Best Contemporary Folk Album,” and “Best Recording Package.” Paste Magazine named Middle Cyclone the “Album Cover of the Decade,” and Amazon.com listed it as #1 in the “Top 100 Amazon Picks.” Case is also a member of the mostly-Canadian band the New Pornographers.

According to Neko:
826 gives young folks the opportunity to see their own works PUBLISHED, tangible and important. I want all young people to see the path illuminate before them as their self worth grows. 826 is a positive AND challenging place for young minds from ALL different backgrounds. 826 also strives to raise the profile of teachers in America, and celebrate them as the superstars they are! I am so proud to be a part of this event, and I hope to do 826 proud with this drawing.
